CHALLENGE YOURSELF

You can do a Triathlon, just at an Average Joe’s pace! Our 2024 Average Joe Triathlon includes "land-based" swimming options so you can complete the challenge at home, outdoors, or at the Y. Swim, bike, and run/walk to complete all three events in six weeks, February 5 through March 17. Whether you participate as a team or on your own, everyone who finishes the race receives a crewneck sweatshirt.

After you register, use the Goal Center of our Y app (for iOS or Android) to set a weekly distance goal and track your progress. Submit your completed activity log by March 17.

Ages 12 & up: $35/Member, $50/Program Participant. Please sign-up by Friday, February 23 to guarantee that you'll receive the sweatshirt upon completion.

  Who can participate?

Anyone ages 12 & up can participate. While joining the challenge doesn't grant non-members access to Y facilities and classes, the challenge can be completed outdoors or at home (see SWIM @ HOME options). Members 12-15 years old must complete the Teen Fitness Orientation in order to use the Fitness Center.

How many triathlons can I complete?

You may complete as many triathlons as you’d like in the 6 weeks; however, you may only register for one and you only receive one prize for completion.

How do I track my miles?

To receive your prize for completing the triathlon, miles need to be entered on your activity log sheet. But, you can use the Goal Center of our Y app (iOS or Android) to set a weekly distance goal and track your progress.

  • Open the Goal Center
    Click CREATE GOAL.

  • Pick your goal Type
    Distance

  • Set your Target
Decide your goal for the week.

  • Select the number of weeks
Choose 1 week for a weekly goal.

  • Name Your Goal
Click CREATE and you’re on your way!
Where are the log sheets? How do I fill them out?

For Y members, your log sheet will be filed under your last name in the log sheet binder at the front desk. Simply track whatever miles you complete within the 6 weeks. Once you’ve finished all of your distances, check the box next to the TOTAL line at the bottom of your log sheet.

If you're completing the triathlon virtually, you can download your activity log, print it out, and use it to track your progress. Just remember to turn in your completed log sheet to the Welcome Desk at the Y by Sunday, March 17.

Do the miles I swim/bike/run outside the Y count?

Yes! The Average Joe's Triathlon operates on the honor system.

What should I do if the pool is always busy?

It’s okay to ask a swimmer to share their lane and lifeguards are available to assist, if needed. Also, check our pool schedule so you know when open swim times and classes are offered.

I don’t like to swim. Can I skip it?

No, you must complete the swim, bike, and run/walk challenges. If you don’t like to swim, find a team member to join you and they can take the swimming distance. You may also substitute water exercise classes, land-based cardio exercise, or land-based circuits for the laps.

I’m part of a team, but one of my team members hasn’t logged anything. Will they get a prize sweatshirt?

Ideally, only contributing participants receive a crewneck sweatshirt. However, that’s up to you. We will order sweatshirts for all registered participants with completed log sheets, so if your team member is on the log sheet, they’ll receive one.

May I switch my sweatshirt size?

No. The size selected at the time of registration will be the size ordered for you, so substitutions are not allowed. Make sure you pick the right size by looking at our sample sweatshirts when you register.

When will the crewneck sweatshirts arrive?

Sweatshirts will be ordered at the start of the challenge so that they will be ready for you once you’ve finished. When you’ve completed the triathlon, we’ll email you to let you know when your sweatshirt is ready to be picked-up.
