The newest exercise or diet trend is always readily available on social media but how do you know it is right for you? Understanding three categories of behavior change will set you up for long term success vs short term results.
Major factors that influence behavior and behavior change decisions can be divided into three general categories: predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing.
Our life experiences, knowledge, ethnic and cultural history, as well as current views and values, all serve as predisposing variables that affect behavior. Age, sex, race, income, family history, educational background, and access to health care are some of the variables that may predispose us to specific health conditions.
Enabling factors include our knowledge and skills, as well as our physical, emotional, and mental abilities, as well as the priorities and commitment to health of the community and the government. They also include safe and practical resources and facilities that influence how easy or difficult it is to make decisions about our health. Positive enablers motivate you to follow through on your resolutions to alter your behavior. Negative enablers undermine your attempt to make a change.
Reinforcing factors include things like employer actions and policies, health care prices and access, community resources, and access to healthy educations, as well as the presence or absense of support, encouragement, or discouragement that influential individuals in your life bring to a situation. The way you reward or punish yourself while going through the transition process also matters. Accepting minor setbacks and focusing on your victories can encourage future success.
