Tina Leehr was diagnosed with stage IV cancer in 2009 when she was just 21 years old. Upon graduation from college, she returned home to North Carolina to begin treatment, which included chemotherapy and radiation. Between her pain and the side effects of her treatments, Tina was relegated to her bed most days.
After finishing her first round of treatments, Tina was physically weak and emotionally weathered. Luckily, she found the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program at the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina. While LIVESTRONG helped to strengthen her body, perhaps the most important benefit of the program was the connection with other cancer survivors. Tina found a group of people that could relate to her experience, when most of her peers could not. LIVESTRONG restored a sense of hope in Tina – that she could have a bright future in spite of her cancer.
In the years after LIVESTRONG, Tina would find herself ice climbing in Colorado, swimming with dolphins in Florida, dog sledding in Alaska, pursuing a masters degree in Washington, D.C., and traveling around the world.
Sadly, Tina lost her battle with cancer three years ago, on February 12, 2020. To honor Tina's life, Gretchen Leehr and Matt Krawczyk are raising money for LIVESTRONG at the YMCA to help cancer patients and survivors, like Tina, receive the life-changing benefits of the program at no cost. Donations will benefit the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program at the YMCA of Greater Waukesha County, where Matt serves as a board member.

In 2008, the YMCA partnered with the LIVESTRONG Foundation to help cancer survivors begin the journey toward recovery with the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. Part of the Y’s commitment to strengthening community through healthy living, the program offers adults affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.
