Generations Share Commitment to the Y
Youth development is a key part of the Y’s mission, and helps children meet their full potential. Learn more about Edward’s development at the Y through swim lessons, sports, and the amazing support of his teachers!
“My Grandpa, Jerry, who is 76 years old, had YMCA membership at the Waukesha Branch since middle school. My dad, Andrew, had Y membership at the South Shore Y in Cudahy with his family for 5 years. He was in middle school at that time as well. When his family moved to Milwaukee, they joined the Southwest YMCA. After my dad married my mom Sarah, they joined the Y as well.
When I was born and ready to run and swim, they enrolled me in the infant/toddler swimming classes. At that time, they hung on to me in the water and caught me when I jumped into the warm small pool as my parents held my hands. I was waiting for my chance to run and swim on my own and wondering how long it would take to break free from them.
My dad and mom like to exercise in the weight room and on the track. I participated in swimming lessons for four years, joined basketball night for preschoolers, and played outdoor soccer on Saturday mornings in the summer.
My family thinks my turning point to focus, listen and participate occurred when I was in the Run and Fun Class. It was at that time that I made friends with other children and adults. Ms. Jean and Mr. Scott still remember my name! The goals that I achieved were listening, following directions and sharing with other children in my classes. I loved listening to stories and seeing the pictures as my instructors read to us.”
