We have a wide selection of Parent & Child, Preschool, School Age, and Teen & Adult Swim Lessons.

Swim Lesson Descriptions

  Parent & Child Lessons (6-35 Months)

These classes are designed to get both the parent and the child comfortable in the water. The main focus is on water adjustment and safety in and around the water. These fun classes teach through music and games while the parent guides the child through basic water skills. Swim diapers required if not potty-trained.

Staff to child ratio 1:12 unless otherwise noted. 

Shrimp/Kipper/Inia (6-18 Months)

Parents are lead through activities for basic water adjustment and water safety using instructional toys and flotation devices. Children who are ready and able will work with flotation belt and paddle skills.

Shrimp/Kipper/Inia/Perch (6-35 Months)

Parents are lead through activities for basic water adjustment and water safety using instructional toys and flotation devices. Children who are ready and able will work with flotation belt and paddle skills.

Perch (19-35 Months)

The instructor continues to work with parents and children on water safety and beginning skills along with introduction of flotation belts, preparing child to work with an instructor on his or her own when they turn 3 years.

  Preschool Lessons (Ages 3-5)

Classes are taught without the parent in the water. Children must pass each level to move to the next level. 30 minute class. Staff to child ratio 1:5. 

Pike with Parent (Ages 3-5)

For the child not quite ready to swim without the parent. Parent is in the water during first few classes. Pike skills taught.

PIKE

Children at this level may be apprehensive and may not be able to move freely without aid of an instructor. Children will learn to float, put face in the water, basic paddle stroke, kicking and basic safety.

EEL

Children entering this level can swim 5 feet on stomach and back without flotation along with being comfortable going underwater. Children will learn front and back glides, front paddle with rhythmic breathing, back paddle and basic safety.

RAY/STARFISH

Children entering this level can swim on their front and back 20 feet without flotation. Children will improve strokes, work on rotary breathing, build endurance, and learn more about safety and rescue.

  School Age Lessons (Ages 6-12)

Classes focus on stroke development, personal safety, personal growth, rescue skills, and fun! Children must pass each level to move to the next level.

POLLIWOG

Children at this level may be apprehensive and are considered beginning swimmers. Children will learn water adjustment, front and back floats and glides, paddle strokes, treading and basic safety.

GUPPY

Children entering this level can swim on their front and back 20 feet without flotation and are comfortable with their face in the water. Children will continue to work on endurance, stroke improvement, and basic safety. They will also be introduced to rhythmic breathing.

MINNOW

Children entering this level can swim front and back paddle for 25 yards without flotation. Children will learn front crawl with rotary breathing and back crawl along with increase their endurance. They will be introduced to whip kick.

FISH

Children entering this level are able to swim 25 yards of front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl and breaststroke. Children will work toward improving technique while building endurance to swim 50 yards each of front and back crawls and elementary backstroke. Improve coordination of breaststroke and butterfly.

FLYING FISH/SHARK

Children entering this level are able to swim at least 50 yards of all strokes. Children will work toward refining competitive strokes along with build endurance to swim 100 yards. Children will also learn advanced personal safety and rescue skills.

  Specialty Swim
PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS (Ages 3 and Older)

Beginner or advanced, work with certified swim instructors individually or in a group of two.

STROKE TECHNIQUE (Ages 8-16)

To enroll in this level, participants must be able to swim at least 50 yards (2 lengths) of the pool using front and back crawl along with demonstrate ability to swim breaststroke. This class builds on the foundations developed in our YMCA core swimming lessons through detailed attention to form and the breakdown of each competitive stroke.

  Teen Lessons
TEEN SWIM LESSONS (Ages 11-15)

This group swim lesson provides a comfortable environment for teens to learn to swim by encourag-
ing them to set personal goals and achieve them. A certified instructor will work with each participant’s current skill level and help them improve. All skill levels are welcome.

  Adult Lessons (Ages 16 & Older)
ADULT BEGINNER SWIM LESSONS

Individuals choosing this level may have a fear of the water, have very little to no swimming skills, and are ready to take the first step toward learning to swim. You will work toward your own personal goals while working on water adjustment, gaining confidence, floating, basic swimming safety skills.

ADULT INTERMEDIATE SWIM LESSONS

Participants must be able to swim on front and back at least one full length of the pool without hesitation or fear. This class provides a comfortable environment for adults to improve their swimming skills. Participants work on individual goals at their own pace with a certified instructor.
