Move stronger. Live independently.

Stay Strong and Steady

Strength training can do more than build muscle. It can improve functional movement, coordination, and balance, helping support independence and reduce the risk of falls, especially as we age.

Move With Confidence

At the Y, strength and balance activities can help you feel more confident in everyday movement. From resistance exercises to balance focused activities, small steps can make a meaningful difference.

The CDC recommends muscle strengthening and balance activities for older adults, while the WHO Guidelines recommend activities that combine functional balance and strength to help improve physical function and prevent falls.

Build strength. Improve balance. Keep moving with confidence at the Y.

Make balance exercises a regular part of your weekly routine. Simple activities can be practiced daily when appropriate for your abilities, alongside aerobic activity and strength training. Start with short sessions and use stable support as needed. A fitness professional or physical therapist can help you choose a suitable routine.

Walking supports overall fitness and mobility, but adding specific balance exercises helps you practice staying steady in different positions. Combine walking with activities such as supported single-leg stands, heel-to-toe walking, and strength training for a more complete routine.
