What is the Y? To many it is a place - a place where the community gathers safely with family and friends or where members work on becoming the person they want to be. Some think of the Y as an organization - a proud leader in the community. Others recognize the Y as a movement - a tireless drive to change lives and to strengthen the communities we serve. But there's more to our story. Every day the spirit of the Y brings us together by the caring, passion, and conviction of those dedicated to our mission. Stories are collected from our members and volunteers that are impacted by our movement or are the reason we can create an impact.
Below is an article written by one of our board members , Pastor Rob, who describes so eloquently the power of volunteerism.
Every great life story I’ve ever heard, has one thing in common. What is that? A Someone. Who the Someone is changes with just about every story, but the Someone is always there. It’s the Someone who saw the potential in another and spoke the words of hope and inspiration. It’s the Someone who showed up and walked beside when no one else seemed to care. It’s the Someone who showed the way through when the path was blocked by seemingly insurmountable obstacles. It’s the Someone who cared enough to give of her or himself, so someone else’s life could be changed for the good.
And almost always, it seems that the Someone didn’t do it because they had to; the Someone did it because they felt compelled to. You see, the Someone had a Someone, maybe even several Someones who brought hope and inspiration into her or his world. I have had what seems like countless Someones bring that hope and inspiration into my life and it has helped me become who I am today, a Someone who lives to help.
You too can be a Someone by giving your time, your energy, your resources to help Someone become all that she or he was meant to be. Yes, it will cost you something, maybe even quite a bit, but the return on the investment will be the smile of satisfaction knowing that you got to be part of Someone’s great life story!
Thanks,
Pastor Rob
