SIMPLE SUGGESTIONS TO HELP YOU REACH YOUR FITNESS & NUTRITION GOALS

Sunday, April 14, 2024
By: Kristen, Operations Director at the Y

The best way to set yourself up for success in fitness or nutrition is through preparation. Whether your goal is to hit the gym more often or improve your dietary habits, here are some simple strategies to help you reach your goals.

fitness goal

Goal related to fitness routine?

  1. Pack your gym bag and place it in your car the night before, ensuring you have that extra pair of shoes if needed.
  2. Bring workout clothes and an additional pair of shoes to keep in your office so they are always readily available.
  3. Find a workout buddy to join you.
  4. Allocate yourself a realistic block of time to complete a workout (don’t allocate only 30 minutes when it might take 10 minutes to get changed before and after).
  5. Increase your intensity so you can work out less! 1 min of vigorous exercise = 2 minutes of moderate.
  6. Schedule time in your workday to exercise and commit to it. Avoid double-booking yourself with other meetings or tasks. Self-care is just as essential as the other responsibilities you have.
  7. Understanding who you are is also key to success. Don’t set your alarm early to get up and work out if you are not an early riser (don’t want you to hit snooze and miss your chance). Too tired at the end of the day? Then maybe an early morning or lunchtime workout is more your thing.

nutrition goal

Goal related to nutrition?

  1. Prepare breakfast, snacks, lunches, dinners, etc. for the week on Sunday so all you need to do is grab and go, reducing the number of times you need to get take-out or reach for unhealthy snacks.
  2. Out of sight, out of mind. Maybe your goal is weight loss and you want to reduce your unhealthy food intake, however, your partner is not on board with giving up their unhealthy habits. Try to store these items away in a cabinet so you do not see them, and ask your partner not to eat those things when you are around or to go somewhere else where you will not see them eat it.
  3. Another way to keep it out of sight is to not purchase the items. It is difficult to eat them if you do not bring them home with you.
  4. If going to the grocery store is challenging due to all the unhealthy temptations, sign up for grocery pick up so you never have to be tempted and you get what you need.
  5. Purchase only the items on your list when you go to the grocery store and hold yourself to it to reduce spending and unnecessary purchases.
