SIMPLE WAYS TO SUCCEED WHEN COOKING

Sunday, April 14, 2024

For some, cooking can be relaxing and enjoyable; for others, it can be stressful and confusing. If you're looking for simple ways to get started in the kitchen, here are three tips you can try.

  1. Select a simple recipe. The hallmarks of a simple recipe will include a short ingredient list and easy-to-find ingredients.
  2. Work with a buddy. Having someone in the kitchen to work with and ask questions about the recipe you are making can help to clear up any questions you may have, like, what's the difference between chopped and diced?
  3. Attend a cooking class. For visual learners, this can help with learning how to prepare a meal from start to finish. Click here to learn more about the Y's Something's Cooking Demos.

BONUS: have a trash bowl on your counter. As you prepare your meal, you may find yourself making a lot of trips to the trash to throw out containers and scraps. A trash bowl placed within arm's reach can help you contain all the items you will throw away once your meal is made.

BONUS+: if you are into composting, you can also include a compost bowl on your counter to help with taking foods craps to your compost bin.

MEAL PREP TIPS

From Clancy, a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach at the Y

  1. Before grocery shopping, make a grocery list.
  2. Creating a weekly menu that remains consistent from week to week can simplify grocery shopping trips.
  3. Batch cooking: prepare one large dish that you can enjoy throughout the week (such as a pot of chili) or make a double recipe of a freezer-friendly favorite dish and store extra meals for a busy week.
